Running water features do help cool your pool water. The simple explanation is evaporation is heat loss. Heat energy transfers during the process of transforming liquid into vapor. Water passing through the air and over surfaces increases the rate at which evaporation happens. So, heat energy is transformed and lost during this process.
Also, anything disturbing the surface that creates waves and ripples increases evaporation. If you knew the formula and factors for calculating evaporation (water temperature, air temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, radiant heat from the sun, and other factors) and then measured the square feet of your pool surface, you could calculate how much water you will evaporate per square foot in a given amount of time.
Now, take that flat surface and make it wavy and rippled from waterfalls and disturbance. You have a much greater area of water in contact with the atmosphere, which increases evaporation.
It’s important to remember that all these factors also accelerate the release of carbon dioxide from the water. The higher the concentration of carbon dioxide in the water, the lower your pH. This can cause your pH to rise more quickly. It’s crucial to stay on top of your pH. A higher pH reduces the effectiveness of your chlorine (hello algae) and is a significant factor in LSI. The higher pH, especially in the warmer water of summer, can lead to calcium scaling and metal staining. If you’re using waterfalls and features to cool your water, it’s essential to test and dose frequently to maintain your pool water’s balance and sanitation.
You also need to consider that the increased evaporation means an increased amount of fill water to replace water loss. Fill water requires additional treatments to maintain good water balance. It can change pH, alkalinity, phosphate levels, calcium levels, and TDS.
Cooling your pool is great for those who are using the pool, but it does require a little more attention from those who are caring for the pool.
