Frank and Jacque discuss the five basics of pool care that every person who takes care of a pool should do to reduce costs and make it simple.
00:00- 09:25 introduction
09:26- the fab 5. do these 5 basic things to make maintenance easier and save yourself money. keep it simple
11:40- water chemistry, test chlorine, ph, and alkalinity weekly at a minimum. test calcium, TDS, and cya, and verify salt level monthly at a minimum. Maintain a good LSI or water balance. be sure to calculate the water temperature in your water balance. keep chlorine at 7.5% of cya level, with borates of 40 to 50 ppm, and keep chlorine at a minimum of 5% of cya
15:25- circulation is critical in maintaining your pool. turn the entire pool clockwise or counterclockwise. Adjust returns or change out returns to ones more directional to accomplish better circulation. algae love dead spots.
19:24- Filter removes organics and contaminants from the pool body, so your chemistry does not have to deal with them in the pool’s body. make sure the volume of water in the pool passes through the filter at least 2 times per day, the more the better. Know your clean filter pressure and monitor it. Clean and backwash the filter as needed. Dirty filters reduce flow in the pool. know the sound of the filter pump when it is operating well so you recognize when there is an issue.
24:04- remove debris from the pool. dead organics release nutrients into the water that feed algae. keep your pool clean. keep flower beds and mulch away from the pool. keep skimmer baskets emptied. empty pump baskets. replace broken skimmer baskets and pump baskets.
26:23—Brush your pool walls and raised flat areas weekly or on a regular basis. Cleaners do not do enough of the scrubbing needed in your pool. Algae attaches to the walls. Some pool finishes have many little crevices that algae can be protected in. Brushing helps remove protective layers of algae and gets the algae into the water, where good chemistry can kill it.
